The Development Act 1993 states that it requires all South Australian homes are fitted with an operational smoke alarm. This means either landowner or residential landlords are accountable for ascertaining a functioning smoke alarm is installed in your dwelling.
Fines apply if smoke alarms are not installed.
What type of smoke alarm is required?
Depending on the age of your home & when you acquired your property, will determine what kind of smoke alarm is required.
- For homes or residential properties owned before 1/2/98, it’s compulsory for them to be installed with a replaceable battery powered smoke alarm.
- For homes or residential rental properties purchased on or subsequent to 1/2/98, your smoke alarm must be installed within 6 months of date of purchase of the dwelling and you are also obliged to fit a
- 240 volt, mains powered smoke alarm OR
- 10-year life, non-replaceable, non detachable, permanently connected battery powered smoke alarm
· It is mandatory to install a 240 volt mains powered smoke alarm if your home or residential rental property was built on or after 1/1/95.
